NEWBURGH, IN, September 9, 2013 – Matrix Design Group, LLC (“Matrix”) announced that the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine
Safety and Health Administration (“MSHA”) approved three of Matrix’s new advanced-technology atmospheric monitoring sensors (“AMS”) for use in underground mining operations. The new sensors include a high-accuracy airflow sensor, a lowpower methane (“CH4”) sensor, and a flexible-use carbon monoxide (“CO”) sensor.
Matrix developed the sensors as part of its new MX3 system. The MX3 system integrates voice communications, tracking, atmospheric monitoring, and controls. At the request of Alpha Natural Resources, Matrix also developed additional system components and sensor capabilities that allow its MX3 technology to be used with a variety of other atmospheric monitoring and CO monitoring systems.
Each sensor is designed for use in multiple operating scenarios. The sensors can be powered by wire or battery and data can be transmitted by wire or wirelessly. The sensors also feature an LCD display that provides dynamic instructions for step-through calibration, simplifying operation and eliminating the need for mine personnel to carry lengthy calibration instruction cards.
“We believe this suite of sensors fundamentally advances the capabilities of atmospheric monitoring in mining, with positive benefits for both mine ventilation management and miner safety,” said Matrix President, Aric Pryor. “Our dedicated development team created a group of next-generation sensors that are more accurate and easier to use than currently installed sensors.
Matrix was excited to assist Alpha with the implementation of safety innovations at their operations, and to expand the capability of our MX3 sensors to work with a variety of existing AMS or CO monitoring systems.”
